The three main causes of energy blockages

This really is the time of year when we need to be nurturing ourselves both emotionally and physically, ensuring we maintain optimum health. Ironically, as the year starts anew, so many of us complain of feeling tired and ‘run down’, susceptible to coughs and colds and with depleted energy levels. I thought it was an appropriate time to remind you where our ‘human energy’ comes from, how we can harness it and also explain what can be blocking the energy that we so desperately need.

What is ‘human energy’?

Central to Eastern philosophy, Qi (or “Chi”) means life force energy. It is considered to be the invisible energy that supports all life on the planet. In traditional culture, an abundant flow of Qi or ‘human energy’ throughout the body is believed to maintain a state of balance, lasting health and mental wellbeing. It is also thought that, when people are drained of energy (Qi), they begin to experience declining health and emotional imbalances.

Our life is created by Qi and supported by nature’s energy. Qi, the human battery, determines our lifespan and is the original energy we receive at conception. It supports our organs and cells and is responsible for the functioning of our body. Nature’s energy, however, can be compared to the fuel we put in a car – i.e. we absorb nature’s energy from food, water, air and sunlight.

These days many people are short of energy. Despite a healthy diet and sufficient exercise and rest, we still feel tired. This is because we have depleted our reserves of our human energy and our battery has become flat. When this happens, taking more rest or improving the quality of our food and trying to lead a healthier life will not necessarily give us more energy or resolve our health issues.

Energy channels

The human body has a network of 12 main energy channels (meridians) that carry Qi throughout the body. The natural flow of Qi energy is responsible for making us feel healthy, not just on a physical level but also on an emotional, mental and spiritual level as well. From an eastern point of view, there are two main causes of ill health:

  1. A shortage of human energy (Qi)
  2. Energy blockages

When we are short of ‘human energy’ our body cannot function effectively, which in turn causes stress, fatigue and pain. In addition, a shortage of ‘human energy’ affects our emotions, making us feel negative and further draining our energy.

Energy blockages

There are three main causes of energy blockages:

  1. Physical: these include blockages caused by toxins in food, environmental pollution and other chemicals.
  2. Emotional: these come from negative, strong or repeated emotions such as anger, fear, anxiety and depression.
  3. Spiritual: these are caused by inherited energy patterns passed down through the generations.
